Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, announced in a televised Eid-ul-Fitr address that the next national elections will be held in the first half of April 2026. This will be the first election since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s exit.
Yunus, a Nobel Peace laureate who took charge last August after a student-led uprising forced Hasina to flee to India, said the Election Commission will release a detailed election roadmap at the right time. The government aims for a fair and peaceful voting process.
The unrest began in July 2024 as student protests against public sector job quotas, escalating into one of Bangladesh’s deadliest political crises since independence in 1971. This turmoil led to Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the formation of the interim government.
Dr. Yunus stressed the government’s duty to ensure a clean, festive, and widely participated election atmosphere. He emphasized preventing future crises by creating a stable environment conducive to peaceful elections across the country.
