The development of Artificial Intelligence technology has reached a point where it is not limited to answering questions or creating content. In fact, we are moving toward the era of Agentic AI, which consists of intelligent systems capable of reasoning, planning, making decisions, and performing tasks with little to no human intervention. A few leading AI models, along with several others, have already achieved an unprecedented level of autonomy, driving a new wave of innovation and transforming industries worldwide.

The Growth of Autonomous AI Systems

The shift from traditional Conversational AI technologies toward autonomous AI agents represents one of this decade’s most profound shifts in technology. The modern AI systems we call AI agents or AI assistants, whether manifested in the form of ChatBots, VideoBots, VoiceBots, or Telephony AIs, have become intelligent coworkers.

The new generation of AI agents is capable of scheduling appointments, solving user problems, automating processes, interpreting all kinds of documents, and communicating with other AI devices to perform complex tasks. While the benefits of the new technology are huge, there are many obstacles in terms of governance and accountability, transparency, prejudice, information security, and compliance.

Placing Humans in the Centre of the Process

As people increasingly adopt the use of AI, governance should not be an afterthought. The correct human-centric approach embraces the concept of the fact that AI should be used to improve human intelligence rather than take away accountability from humans. These systems have to be explained, auditable, and managed under the supervision of human controllers.

Sovereign AI: Building Trust with Local Intelligence

India’s increasing interest in Sovereign AI shows the importance of having better control over data, infrastructure, and the development of AI. Local technologies/models like leading Indian AI models show the way in which local AI ecosystems can help organizations comply with regulations while being locally relevant.

This becomes even more effective when combined with Domain and Enterprise-Specific Models (LLMs/SLMs) that are based on verified organizational knowledge rather than relying only on the data on the internet.

AI Must Also Be Accessible to Fulfill Its Promise of Improving Ease of Living

One of the key promises of AI applications is the improvement of the ease of living of users. The availability of Voice First technology brings technology use in the native language to millions of users, while Accessible AI makes use of digital services easier for individuals with limited literacy, cognitive impairment, or inability to use traditional interfaces.

Governance Will Drive the Next Wave of AI Technology

The future development of AI will depend not only on the sophistication of AI technology but also on the effectiveness of governance frameworks that shape its use. The movement from AI as a digital assistant to AI as a digital decision-maker will raise the challenge of getting innovation and responsibility balanced. Hence, successful players will create AI technologies that are transparent, safe, ethical, and accountable.
