In a key maritime operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully transferred the tow of distressed container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 to the ocean-going tug Offshore Warrior, 20 nautical miles off Kochi on Friday.
Challenging sea conditions had earlier caused the vessel to drift, delaying aerial operations. Nevertheless, a Navy Sea King helicopter successfully airlifted a salvage team onto the vessel under adverse weather conditions.
Three Indian Coast Guard ships remain on station, engaged in firefighting and escort duties. Only minor smoke and residual hotspots are currently reported onboard.
The coordinated operation involving the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force has averted what could have been a major environmental disaster along the southwest coast.
The ICG is now closely coordinating with the Directorate General of Shipping to ensure the vessel remains at least 50 nautical miles from the Indian coastline. This action is in line with internationally accepted practices, pending further decisions by the vessel’s owners.
This operation marks a significant step in mitigating a potentially hazardous situation and safeguarding the coastal marine environment. The situation is expected to further stabilise with the arrival of additional firefighting tugs in the coming hours.
The Indian Coast Guard continues to remain fully prepared for such maritime contingencies, working in close synergy with sister services, regulatory agencies, state authorities, and private salvors to ensure the protection of life, property, and the marine ecosystem.
