CGTN: On climate change, we’re running out of time, not options
BEIJING, Dec. 2, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Beijing, the strong, fast-beating heart of Chinese prosperity, has been known as a safe and stable city free from natural calamities. But not the summer of 2023. Throughout the season, the mercury soared, with daily highs consistently hitting over 40°C. Then as the capital had a relative respite from sweltering heat, there came the heavy rain, flooding and displacing thousands of people.

China is doing everything to cultivate a more sustainable cycle of nature, to pay off previous ecological debts, avoid new debts, and strive to save our planet in more creative ways.
If climate change is a global concern, the burden is not equally shared. On the one hand, developed countries are responsible for most of the heat-trapping emissions since the Industrial Revolution. On the other, developing countries have lower emissions, but are bearing the brunt of a hotter climate. Promises from some of the world's biggest economies haven't been panning out, delayed by political deadlock, bureaucratic hurdles and debates over new rules to expedite aid from development banks and private donors.
An injustice burns at the heart of the climate crisis and its flame is scorching hopes and possibilities, as world leaders are warning. "We cannot continue," Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados called, "to put the interest of a few before the lives of many."
How to make sure the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, with all pulling in the same direction? It needs leadership, vision, and multilateralism. China, along with the rest of the world, is taking the lead to give its best shot, bringing down the price of renewable energy, sharing knowhow for deploying sustainable projects, and transitioning to a low-carbon era. With climate change being a global issue, only in a global approach and by joint efforts can we translate the will into concrete outcomes, and mitigate the climate we changed.

Masdar Joins Forces with RWE in £11 billion Investment to Co-develop Massive 3GW Offshore Wind Projects in UK
DUBAI, UAE, Dec. 1, 2023 /PRNewswire/ --
- Masdar, the UAE's clean energy powerhouse, to acquire 49 percent stake in RWE's 3GW Dogger Bank South (DBS) offshore wind projects, as part of £11billion investment in UK's renewables sector

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE's clean energy powerhouse, is part of an £11billion investment into the UK's renewable energy sector and is purchasing a 49 percent stake in RWE's 3 gigawatt (GW) Dogger Bank South (DBS) projects - which form one of the world's largest planned offshore wind farms. DBS is capable of powering millions of British homes, reducing emissions and creating up to 3,000 jobs. Closing of the transaction is subject to customary approvals and expected in the first quarter of 2024.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the UN's climate change conference COP28, in the UAE. The £11billion joint investment will provide a huge boost to the UK economy and demonstrates the UAE's long-term commitment to supporting net-zero goals in Britain and around the world. It builds on the £10 billion UAE-UK Sovereign Investment Partnership (UK-UAE SIP) to invest in technology, infrastructure and the energy transition.
The 3GW DBS projects bring together global clean energy pioneers Masdar and RWE, a leading renewable energy company headquartered in Germany. The mega-facility is expected to generate enough energy to power 3 million typical UK homes. The projects are predicted to create 2,000 jobs during construction and more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs during their operational phase.
Masdar Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, and the Chief Executive Officer of RWE, Dr Markus Krebber, signed the agreement at COP28 in Expo City Dubai, on December 1.
Located over 100 kilometers off the northeastern coast of England, the DBS offshore wind farms will be split across two sites, the DBS East Array and the DBS West Array. Each site will have the capacity for 1.5GW and span 500 square kilometers. Masdar will acquire a 49% stake in the landmark renewables project while RWE, with a 51% share, will remain in charge of development, construction and operation throughout the life cycle of the projects.
The construction phase could start as early as end 2025 and the first 800MW of electricity is planned to come online in 2029. The DBS projects are expected to be fully commissioned by end of 2031.

The deal demonstrates Masdar's long-standing commitment to advancing offshore wind projects in the UK and Europe. A decade ago, Masdar, RWE and its partners launched the 630MW London Array wind farm, the world's largest at the time. Today's investment in the 3GW DBS projects - almost five times as big as London Array - shows Masdar's steadfast expansion into the exciting offshore wind sector. Masdar has also invested in the 30MW Hywind project, which was the world's first floating offshore wind farm, and the 402MW Dudgeon offshore wind farm. In July, Masdar invested in the 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm set to power 475,000 homes. The company's Global Offshore Wind division is based in London and Masdar is pursuing a strategy of investing and developing projects at the early stages to further strengthen its expertise as an offshore wind developer.

Offshore wind energy could generate 380GW by 2030, provided investment is increased and permitting protocols are accelerated, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. With the UK and Europe setting ambitious legally binding net-zero goals, Masdar will continue to harness opportunities to develop the region's burgeoning wind energy sector.
RWE is leading the way to a green energy world. Between 2024 and 2030, RWE will invest 55 billion euros worldwide in offshore and onshore wind, solar energy, batteries, flexible generation, and hydrogen projects. By the end of the decade, the company's green portfolio will grow to more than 65 gigawatts of generation capacity, which will be perfectly complemented by global energy trading. RWE is decarbonizing its business in line with the 1.5-degree reduction pathway and will phase out coal by 2030. RWE will be net zero by 2040.

Upon the completion of these projects, many Pakistanis have been employed for the daily maintenance of the facilities, after which they would be trained to be engineers or technicians with scientific literacy. A teenager grows out of a village without electricity
Soomro grew up poor in a hot Pakistani village with no electricity and little access to information.
His father, a farmer, had no formal education but was wise in raising his young son, encouraging his curiosity about and exploration of the world of science, including astronomy.
As a student, Soomro had a strong desire to escape poverty. He loved science, and as he explored it, he came to realize the significance of communication and education for individual growth. After excelling in various science competitions he was awarded the President's Merit Scholarships in Pakistan and travelled to the United Kingdom to pursue a PhD. He has gradually earned his place on the international stage and has been engaged in more and greater international collaboration.
Technology gives the underprivileged access to education
Working experience in UNESCO, FAO UN and other organizations has made Soomro deeply aware of the role of science and technology in helping the disadvantaged. In the past, in some remote rural areas, schools were understaffed and under-equipped, especially for subjects such as physics. Science is dynamic but generally the teachers don't get updated training. As a consequence, their education quality lagged far behind that of city schools. The introduction of distance education and collaboration with external teachers has made it possible to greatly improve education in poor areas. However, there is no replacement for the face to face interaction.
Personalized learning is also more favorable for education as artificial intelligence is introduced into traditional classrooms, Soomro says. Students can adjust the pace and difficulty of their learning to suit their needs, and those with disabilities and those who speak different languages are no longer shut out of education.

BANNED BRANDS AND DEFINING FAST FASHION
Banning more fast fashion from Vestiaire Collective's website will spark debate, however, with the climate crisis accelerating and ninety-two million tons of textile waste thrown away every year1, it is a necessary step to reduce fashion's environmental and social impact. As part of the company's mission to change the way people consume, Vestiaire Collective will utilize the platform to bring awareness to issues of textile waste and fashion overconsumption, as well as encourage other key fashion players to join the mission to change the industry. AMSTERDAM, Nov. 16, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Built by Nature, a network and grant-making fund, has announced a global prize totalling €500,000 to recognise innovation and stimulate scalability in the use of biobased materials such as timber, bamboo, hemp, straw, algae, and fungi in construction.
The built environment generates up to 40% of the world's greenhouse gases, and the increased use of sustainably sourced timber and renewable biobased materials offers a tangible, realistic solution to address climate change through decarbonisation of our cities and buildings.
The Built by Nature Prize aims to identify and attract biobased construction material manufacturers and their market-ready innovations from all regions and help those producers overcome barriers to mainstream market entry.
"Given the scale of urban development that is inevitable around the world over the coming decades, we simply cannot afford to build in the way we have in most of Europe for the last few hundred years. We urgently need to find innovative, renewable, low-carbon construction materials to radically reduce the embodied carbon footprint of new buildings and cities." according to Paul King, Built by Nature CEO. To reflect the global scope of the Prize, the judging panel is comprised of leading experts from the built environment, architecture, finance, social value, and biomaterials from around the world. Dr Yasmeen Lari, Pakistan's first female architect and renowned for her leadership at the intersection of architecture and social justice, will serve as Honorary Advisor to the Built by Nature Prize. The Prize jury members are:
- Arief Rabik – Chair and Founder of Bamboo Village Trust, and founder and CEO of PT Indobamboo Lestari in Indonesia.
- Ariel Shtarkman – Managing Partner of Undivided Ventures, Founder of Orca Capital, co-Founder and Managing Director of Atom Assets.

The prize's overall winner will receive an award of €250,000 with the criteria focusing on the demonstrated potential for significant carbon emissions reduction and benefits to nature and local communities.
Three runners-up prizes of €50,000 each will also be awarded based on the same criteria, with €100,000 in discretionary funds reserved for promising projects judged to be worthy of support.
To qualify, proposed solutions must be composed primarily of biomaterials with primary use intended for the built environment; indicate that the product can be successfully manufactured and implemented using currently available technology, and the product/service must already be in market, whether through an early-stage pilot project or openly available.
In addition to the prize money, valuable exposure and storytelling opportunities, benefits to award recipients will include introductions across Built by Nature's extensive frontrunner and partner networks for mentoring support, access to potential investors and new markets, and facilitated connections to peers facing similar challenges and opportunities around the world. In an exclusive interview with CGTN, former Director-General of the WTO Roberto Azevedo said he hopes the U.S. and China can find a way to move forward through the meeting, as a more positive environment between the two superpowers is "absolutely fundamental for the world to feel safer, to feel that we are on the right path."
He suggested that both sides be open to talking and listening to something they don't want to hear.
Gita Gopinath, the first deputy managing director of IMF, told CGTN that it's critical for China and the U.S. and for the global economy to have close relations and good working relations. "There has to be a way for both countries to be able to work together," she said.
Meanwhile, former U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu told CGTN in an interview that "decoupling" between the U.S. and China is a "bad idea," adding that if they do so, whatever little trust left will also begin to vanish.
Noting China has emerged as a significant player and the world's second-largest economy, Chu said the U.S., China and Europe need to work closely to achieve zero carbon.
New starting point for people-to-people exchanges
The Philadelphia Orchestra is back in China 50 years after its historic trip in 1973 when it became the first American orchestra to visit the country.
From November 9 to 18, it is performing concerts and organizing residency activities in Beijing, Tianjin, Suzhou and Shanghai.
In an exclusive interview with CGTN, Tristan Rais-Sherman, the assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, said, "We are really excited to celebrate this historic event and this historic moment."

After the Philadelphia Orchestra concert in Beijing, U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns told CGTN that music unites the two countries. "In 1973, the orchestra came here and brought the two countries together; now we are in another time, where the two countries are reconnecting, our leaders are, our governments are, and our people are."
China and the U.S. also saw regular direct passenger flights increase again starting November 9, bringing more people-to-people exchanges between both countries.
San Francisco, the host city of the upcoming APEC meeting, is well-prepared to draw global attention with its deep cultural and economic ties to the Asia-Pacific region, which could be seen from the historic Chinatown and the fact that a third of its residents have Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry.
Describing the city as a gateway to the Asia Pacific, London Breed, the 45th Mayor of San Francisco, said the city looks forward to building bridges and a better relationship. Breed added that she couldn't wait to see Chinese tourists.
With lanterns always hanging in the city's Chinatown throughout the year, Breed said the city is ensuring they "shine brighter in the APEC."

ZURICH, Nov. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- EF Education First (EF) today released the 2023 edition of its EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), the largest international survey of adult English skills. The index, calculated from the test results of 2.2 million non-native English speakers in 113 countries and regions, reveals a concerning decline in youth English proficiency over the past five years and a growing gender gap.
"This year's index portrays an illusion of global stability – where everyone's English stays about the same, but the truth is that gains in certain countries and regions are being offset by losses in others," said EF EPI author Kate Bell. "Language is essential to sharing perspectives and sparking understanding; and as a bridge language, English has been uniquely positioned to connect people across borders. We look forward to continuing our examination of English proficiency trends over time, as we did for the first time this year."
The EF EPI is based on test scores from the EF Standard English Test (EF SET), used worldwide by schools, companies, and governments for large-scale testing as well as individual test takers.
Key findings include:
- Youth English proficiency continues to drop (-89 points in 18 – 20-year-olds since 2015), driven by a few large countries including India and Indonesia. Many more countries experienced pandemic-related declines in this cohort, accelerating the worldwide trend.
- Workforce proficiency is rising. Worldwide these gains were made during the pandemic period (+20 points for adults over 30 between 2020 and 2021), however, many national trends indicate steady improvement since 2015.
- The gender gap is widening, with men's English improving (+14 points) and women's declining (-19 points since 2014). The gender gap is not uniform, however, with 63 countries at or near gender parity.
- Regionally: Proficiency in East Asia has declined four years running, accelerated this year by Japan and China. Proficiency in the Middle East is stagnant. English is steadily improving in Latin America, but the region's progress is hampered by declining proficiency in Mexico and a slower pace in Brazil. Despite dominating the top of the index, Europe plateaued this year. Finally, English proficiency in Africa is largely stable except for Tunisia and Algeria, both improving quickly.
