Ted Cruz grills Instagram CEO on studies showing negative impact on teens mental health

Senate Commerce Committee hearing, Senator Ted Cruz on Wednesday, questioned Adam Mosseri, Instagram Chief Executive on the research studies showing the negative impact of its platform on teens’ mental health.

Quoting to the research, Ted said, “The research showed that 13 percent of British teenage users and 6 percent of American teenage users who had suicidal thoughts traced the desire to kill themselves to Instagram.”

To which, Adam Mosseri in his reply to the Senate said, “If we’re going to have a conversation about the research, I think we need to be clear about what it says. It showed that one out of three girls who suffer from body image issues find that Instagram makes things worse, and that came from a slide with 23 other statistics where more teens found that Instagram makes things better.”

Further adding to the Instagram stance,  Mosseri said, “Social media platforms like Instagram have helped important movements like body positivity to flourish. It has helped diversify the definitions of beauty, and that’s something that we think is incredible.”
