The Republican-led U.S. Senate on Friday rejected a Democratic-led effort to block President Donald Trump from taking further military action against Iran, just hours after President said he would consider additional airstrikes.
The Senate voted 53 to 47 against the proposed war powers resolution, which would have required the president to seek congressional approval before engaging in further hostilities with Iran.
Under U.S. law, war powers resolutions are considered privileged, meaning the Senate was obligated to debate and vote on the measure. The resolution was introduced earlier this month by Senator Tim Kaine.
