Speaking at the ConneTech Asia Summit, Singapore’s Minister for communications and information, Mr. S Iswaran said, “Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has partnered with local mobile networks operators (MNOs) to hire and reskill professionals in 5G.”
“Under the partnership, it will hire and reskill 1,000 professionals to support the nation’s 5G rollout. Of these 30% will be new roles while the remaining are telecom professionals who will be upskilled in the areas of 5G network, cybersecurity, and solution engineering. The first wave of training will begin at the end of 2020 with MNO’s 5G professionals,” he said.
Adding to the statement, Mr. Iswaran further said, “IMDA has also set up 5G workforce transformation committees with MNO’s to oversee the planning and development of their 5G workforce capabilities. IMDA will be appointing a consortium comprising the National University of Singapore and Singapore Polytechnic as the 5G and Telecoms program manager.”
“Overall IMDA will work with the industry and equip a total of 5,000 professionals over the next three years to develop a strong 5G skilled workforce,” it added.
