In a bid to curb the fake news circulation, and to bring more transparency in the digital media space, the Union Government on February 25, proposed its new draft on Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rule 2021 for social media, OTT platforms, and Digital media.
Addressing the press here in New Delhi, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “We have not framed any new law. We have framed these rules under the existing IT Act.”
“This new law will be implemented within three months of the rules being notified by the government,” Prasad added.
According to the new rules, Social media have to appoint a grievance officer, who shall register complaints in 24 hours, and need to remove mischievous contents within 24 hours after being asked by government agencies or court orders.
