In his first public remarks, Canada’s New Prime Minister, Mark Carney, reaffirmed Canada’s independence and firmly rejected any notion that the country could ever become part of the United States.
Carney’s comments came in response to a journalist’s question about whether he would seek assurances from Canada’s allies regarding the nation’s sovereignty.
“I’ve been clear, personally, and so have all the ministers behind me: Canada will never, ever, in any way, shape, or form, be part of the United States,” Carney said. “America is not Canada. Look at the ceremony we just had. You could not have had that ceremony in America. We would not have that cabinet in America. We are a fundamentally different country, and that will never change.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of Canadian identity, pointing to the leadership of Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Mr. Guilbeault in preserving the nation’s cultural and national values.
“Before we even discuss economics, let me be clear: we will never be part of the United States,” Carney stressed.
Commenting on Canada’s economic relationship with the U.S., Carney said, “The president of the United States is a successful businessperson, and we’re his largest client in many industries. But in business, respect is key. We will continue working together in a respectful, commercial manner, but the nature of Canada means we won’t, and we shouldn’t, become part of the United States.”
“We’re committed to building a stronger Canada, creating high-paying jobs, and strengthening relationships abroad. The truth is, Canada will continue to thrive independently,” he said. “We do this for our people, and eventually, the United States will understand that we are in charge of our own destiny.”
