According to the media reports, “The United States is planning to encourage Afghan Taliban to join the peace process in Afghanistan by offering them safety networks and job opportunities for insurgents.”
In a report published in Dawn on Thursday, said that “Like the US, Pakistan, China, Russia, and other world powers are putting their efforts to encourage the Taliban to join the Afghan peace process, the Defence Department of United States has also outlined a plan for rehabilitating the rebels in a new Afghanistan.”
Quoting to a plan sent to U.S Congress by Pentagon this week, the report said that “Some members of the Taliban may be weary of fighting and ready to lay down their weapons and will only rejoin society if they believe their safety and security of their families are guaranteed and if they have an opportunity to earn enough money to provide for their families.”
The report said, “The Pentagon has also noted that while the local leaders are developing the programmes that may offer a path to peace on a small scale, the Afghan government has government has failed to develop a national reintegration programme for Taliban.”
Eager to persuade the Taliban to join the Afghan peace process, the US is offering them a safety net that includes creating job opportunities for the insurgents, the report said
While the Trump administration has started withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan, the Pentagon advocated maintaining enough troops in Afghan to force the Taliban to join the peace dialogue.
The report added “For past 16 months, the U.S and its partners have used the military force to drive the Taliban towards “a durable and inclusive political settlement.”
The talks were aimed at renewing the Afghan peace process and eventually winding down America’s longest war.
