Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on Monday, citing medical advice and the need to prioritize his health.
In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar invoked Article 67(a) of the Constitution, which allows a Vice President to step down by submitting written notice. He didn’t share any details about his condition or name a specific illness.

In his resignation letter, Dhankhar thanked President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet, and Members of Parliament, describing his time in office as a “learning experience.”
Elected in August 2022, Dhankhar served as VP and ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of Parliament. Before that, he served as Governor of West Bengal and held several political roles at the state and national levels, including as a BJP leader and Member of Parliament. His tenure coincided with a period of heightened legislative activity and growing political polarization.
His resignation comes just weeks into the Modi government’s third term, following its return to power in the 2024 general elections. There is no official word announcement on when the process to elect his successor will begin.
