Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government over the issue of crashing of Sensex, state of economy and handling of the coronavirus issue. Gandhi’s comments come in the backdrop of the ongoing budget session where his party has been raising the issue in both Houses.
“We all can clearly see what has happened in the stock market and how lakhs of people are affected by it. I have been saying that coronavirus too is a serious problem but the government has not handled it well. My question is, the strength of India, our economy – that has been ruined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his policies and his ideology,” Gandhi told reporters in Parliament premises on Thursday evening.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi should answer what he is doing about the economy of the country and what are the reasons which have led to the current situation,” he added.
Sensex tanked 2,919 points to 32,778 – biggest one-day point fall – as Indian stock markets took the hit on Thursday. The development comes in the backdrop of a crash in global equities after the coronavirus outbreak was termed a global pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO).
Gandhi added that under former prime minister Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), the economy was handled well because he understood it.
“For those of you who think this is going to end here, you are mistaken. The work that Modi started with demonetization, poor roll out of Goods and Services Tax (GST), results of those are visible now and this is only the beginning,” he added.
His comments are significant as it signifies the opposition parties, particularly Congress, likely to raise the issue in the rest of the budget session which is scheduled to end on 3 April.
