In a bid to enhance Arctic and national security, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a partnership with Australia to develop a cutting-edge over-the-horizon radar system, with an investment surpassing $6 billion.
The new radar system is designed to improve Canada’s ability to detect and respond to air and maritime threats in the Arctic, a region growing in strategic importance as global tensions rise.
“This system will allow us to better protect our northern territories, ensuring that we can detect and respond to potential threats faster and more effectively,” Carney stated during the announcement.
In addition to this, the government will also allocate nearly $420 million to expand the Canadian Armed Forces’ year-round presence in the Arctic across land, air, and sea, Carney said.
The move comes amid growing concerns over shifting global security dynamics and Canada’s need to assert its sovereignty in the region.
“Our adversaries are increasingly emboldened, and international institutions that have kept Canada secure are now being called into question,” Carney said, adding that Canada must strengthen its northern defenses as traditional alliances, including with the United States.
The initiative is also expected to support economic development in the North and advance reconciliation efforts with Indigenous communities, including the Inuit and First Nations.
