Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday announced a 25% tariff on U.S. imports worth over $155 billion.
Addressing the media, Trudeau accused the U.S. of initiating a trade war against Canada while maintaining close ties with Russia.
“America has launched a trade war against Canada, its closest friend and ally, at the same time they are talking and working closely with Russia,” Trudeau said.
The tariffs will be rolled out in two phases, with an initial 25% levy imposed on $30 billion worth of American goods immediately, followed by the remaining $125 billion in 21 days. The tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. withdraws its trade restrictions against Canada, he stated.
Additionally, Trudeau announced plans to file a dispute resolution claim with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and through the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to address what he described as the Trump administration’s illegal actions.
