Quoting to the Center’s report on Startup ranking for the year 2018, the former chief minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan said that “Maharashtra’s startup policy has failed to engage more startups in Maharashtra.

While addressing a press conference on the 166-page report released by the Center, the former chief minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan on Monday said that “It is saddening to see that Maharashtra does not figure out even among the top 15 states who have ranked as doing a good job in attracting startups.”

The center has assigned the ranking to each state by their performance in having startups in which Gujrat ranked first in the list.

Talking with the press on the report, Chavan said: “The state industries department is responsible for this, but we cannot blame the industries department alone as the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is also responsible for it as he has failed to provide resources for developing startup ecosystem.”

He added “The state’s performance has consistently fallen in ease of doing business category too. In 2015, Maharashtra was ranked 8th, in 2016 it was on 10th position, in 2017 it slipped to 11th and now plunged to 13th in 2018.” Adding to this Chavan said “the incumbent government for being late in bringing its startup policy, which announced earlier this year.”

The former Chief Minister claimed that “the industrial growth rate has fallen in the last four years of the BJP government to 6.5% from the 7.22% during the Congress-NCP rule.”

Chavan also accused the government of seeking credits on the schemes like “Make in India” and “Magnetic Maharashtra” but not paying attention to ground realities.

Whereas in response to Prithviraj Chavan’s accusations, Maharashtra finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar in a statement said that the former CM did not “read the report correctly.”
