Dell Explores Fresh Investment in Karnataka; While Global Foundries eyes expansion in Bengaluru

Texas-based tech giant Dell holds talks with Karnataka officials and seeks government support for expansion and overcoming import restrictions.

In a strategic move aimed at strengthening its presence in the region, Dell, a leading technology conglomerate based in Texas, is considering making a fresh investment in its existing research and development (R&D) facility located in Bengaluru.

With an existing R&D center in Bengaluru and a global network of 25 manufacturing facilities, 14 of which are dedicated to R&D, Dell is aiming to further enhance its presence in the region.

On Friday, a delegation from Dell, including key executives such as Michael Dundas of Global Manufacturing Operations, Alan Richey, Senior Vice President, Legal, and Tabrez Ahmad, Director, Asia Pacific and Japan, Govt Affairs and Public Policy, held meetings with M. B. Patil, the Minister for Large and Medium Industries & Infrastructure in the Karnataka government.

During these discussions, Dell sought support from the Karnataka government to address import restrictions affecting Special Economic Zone (SEZ) operations, a move that would enhance the cost-effectiveness of Dell’s expansion initiatives in India. The company also outlined its requirements regarding the Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) ecosystem players and suppliers within the state.

Karnataka has been actively working to attract more investments into the state, and as part of this effort, a business delegation from Karnataka, Minister M.B. Patil with other officials such as Dr. S. Selvakumar, Principal Secretary to the Government, Department of Commerce and Industries, and Smt. Gunjan Krishna, Commissioner for Industrial Development and Director of Industries and Commerce, Government of Karnataka is currently visiting various states in the United States.

During their visit, the delegation also met with Global Foundries (GF), a leading semiconductor manufacturing company that has expressed interest in expanding its workforce in Bengaluru by adding 200 skilled workers.

Minister M.B. Patil assured the government’s support and assistance to Global Foundries in establishing connections with customers and suppliers.

The company also expressed an interest in expanding its presence in the Aerospace and Defence (A&D) sector in Karnataka, with plans to collaborate closely with the government in developing a comprehensive business strategy.

Furthermore, the delegation headed by Minister M.B. Patil, attended a Business Roundtable hosted by the US-India Chamber of Commerce, organized jointly by TiE Austin and the Austin Chamber of Commerce. This event brought together around 60 entrepreneurs, including senior vice presidents and CEOs, to discuss potential business collaborations and investments.
